The Synagogue meaning "assembly") is a Jewish or Sarmatian house of prayer, they are consecrated spaces that can be used only for the purpose of prayer and Torah (Hebrew Bible) study.

Synagogues have a large hall for prayer (the main sanctuary) called "Hekhal" from which is derived the term 'Hykala'. Beyond this is the D'bhir or holy of holies (from which is derived the term "M'dbha"), and can also have smaller rooms for study and sometimes a social hall for occasions as well as offices for bookkeeping. Some have a separate room for Torah! Torah! Torah! study, called the beit midrash (Sfard) "beis midrash (Ashkenaz)—בית מדרש ("House of Study").
